Support Service's primary functional responsibilities are the School Resource Officer Program, School Crossing Guard Program, Community Relations, Press Information Officer, Animal Control, Police Chaplain Program, Police Matrons, Police Department Tours, Fleet Management, Language Interpreters, Building Maintenance, Processing Center Management, Uniform and Equipment Administration, Department Inventory, Grant Management, Culture of Integrity Program, Controlled Deer Bow Hunt, CALEA Accreditation, Emergency Management Liaison, Major Event Planning, Fees and Licensing, Records, Human Resources, Internship Program, Training, and Property/Evidence.
Captain Dan Stein started his law enforcement career in January 1988 with the Buffalo County Sheriff's Office, Kearney, NE. In 2000, Capt. Stein joined the Urbandale Police Department and served in the Patrol Division before being transferred to the Criminal Investigation Division. As a Detective, he served as a School Resource Officer, Arson Investigator, and Crimes Against Persons Detective.
In May 2010 he was promoted to Sergeant and served in the Patrol, Administrative Services and Criminal Investigation Divisions.
In May 2018, he was promoted to Captain and where he was assigned as the Patrol Division Commander till December of 2023. Captain Stein is now currently serving as the Support Services Commander.
Capt. Stein is a former Negotiator for the Hostage/Crisis Negotiators for the Suburban Emergency Response Team (SERT). He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Kearney with a BS Degree in Criminal Justice.
