Lions Park Shelter

The Ralph Whitten Shelter at Lions Park is one of three enclosed facilities available for rent. The shelter is nestled within one of Urbandale’s most iconic and centrally located parks. The Ralph Whitten Shelter is a perfect place to hold a business meeting, a community meeting, and a small family gathering or wedding reception. The space can accommodate up to 100 people and has approximately 10, 8-foot rectangular tables and 75 chairs. A kitchen is included in the rental with a stove/oven and 2 under-the-counter, 5.5 cu. ft refrigerators (no freezer space). The shelter is also heated and air conditioned. The shelter is located in Lions Park, at 72nd Street and Aurora Avenue.

Monday - Sunday Rental Rates

  • 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. - $175 resident, $215 nonresident
  • 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. - $150 resident, $190 nonresident
  • 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. - $300 resident, $340 nonresident 

How Do I Rent?
Shelter rentals must be done in person at the Parks and Recreation office at 3600 86th Street. Office hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday.
The full rental fee, plus a $100 refundable deposit is required at the time of reservation. The deposit is refunded 2 weeks after the rental, providing all the rules and regulations are followed. If the reservation is made less than two weeks before the rental date, the full amount must be paid in cash or by credit card.

Credit/Debit Card Service Fees - Effective January, 2019
Please be aware that a non-refundable credit/debit card service fee of 3.95% applies to all in-office and over-the phone credit/debit card transactions with the City of Urbandale (including Parks and Recreation). To avoid the credit card transaction fee, simply pay by check or cash in office. Watch our website for further updates. Thank you!

When can I rent for 2021?

Residents of Urbandale may begin making reservations on October 1, 2020. Non-residents may begin making reservations on January 4, 2021. Contact the Urbandale Parks and Recreation office at 515-278-3963 with any questions.
