The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA), will conduct an assessment from June 2 through June 4 to examine all aspects of the Urbandale Police Department’s policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services.
Verification by the assessment team that the Urbandale Police Department meets the Commission’s standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation – a valued recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.
As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session Wednesday, June 3, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. by calling 515-344-6910. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the session will be conducted via telephone only. Telephone comments are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. A copy of the CALEA standards is available for viewing at the Urbandale Police Department by contacting Lisa Godfrey at 515-331-6807.

The assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and inspect facilities and equipment. The assessors for this review are:
Team Leader: Chief William Benson from Illinois.
Team Member: Richard Bens from Ohio.
Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the agency, they will report to the full Commission. The Commission will determine if the Urbandale Police Department is awarded accredited status.
Accreditation is awarded for four years. During the four-year cycle, the Urbandale Police Department must demonstrate continued compliance with CALEA standards.
