Douglas Avenue Interchange Sculptures

The City of Urbandale completed a beautification and signage project at the Douglas Avenue Interchange off I-35/80 in the Summer of 2020. The City commissioned two sculptures by local artist Clint Hansen that were placed at the two dedicated median spaces along Douglas Avenue. After taking applications and receiving feedback, the Urbandale Public Art Committee selected the artwork for permanent outdoor installation at the Interchange.

Love You to the Moon & Raise You to the Stars by Clint Hansen

The sculptures were inspired by Hansen's real-life experiences. Twelve years ago Hansen chose to move his family from southwest Iowa to Urbandale. Working as an artist, he could have chosen to live anywhere in the country. But Hansen did his homework and liked what he saw in this thriving community.

To obtain long-lasting, maintenance-free art, the sculptures were created from Pal Tiya Premium, an all-weather fiber-reinforced cement-based material. The sculptures are supported from the inside by welded steel armatures and stainless steel mesh. The moon and the star are stained glass lighted from the inside with LED lights.

Both sculptures are approximately 4’ wide, 9’ deep, and 16’ tall. The figures are slightly larger than life-size.

Unfortunately, during the storm in August, 2020, "Love You to the Moon" was damaged.  The piece is currently being redesigned and anticipated to be reinstalled the Spring of 2021.
