Adaptive & Accessible Yoga for All

This is a yoga class for people experiencing body challenges whether due to injury, ongoing physical limitations, mobility issues, arthritis, physical disability, recovering from joint surgery or living in a larger body. During this class, you will learn how to do YOUR yoga. Postures/poses will be adapted to YOUR possibilities. Some students may practice on the mat while others practice in a chair on their mat for all or some of the class. We will work together to discover your version of each posture, supporting you to do the right yoga for your body at this time.

Our bodies change, and yet Yoga can still provide many benefits including building strength, balance, flexibility and peacefulness. All people deserve to have access to yoga if they choose it. Let’s learn how to quiet the mind and live better in the only body we have. If you have a body, a mind and breath, you can practice yoga. Yoga is for all, and that includes you.

Class size limited to 6 to allow for individual attention & social distancing. Students will need to bring a yoga mat and face mask. Blocks & straps will be available for sale and will not be shared. IMPORTANT: Contact Janis at youryogawithjanis@gmail.com for the intake form and email it to her at least 3 days prior to the first session.

Climbing the Curve - Virtual Climbing Challenge

Have you ever thought of climbing Mount Rainier in Washington or reaching the summit of Denali in Alaska? Urbandale Parks and Recreation has come up with a great way to check those off your list without leaving the metro.

June 29 - August 9

What is a Virtual Challenge?

A virtual challenge is a challenge that can be accomplished from any location and any workout you choose. You can run, walk, jog, follow a workout video, lift weights in your basement, etc. As long as you stay active, you'll conquer the challenge!

The rules are simple:

Registration fee is $20/person,

$5 from every registration will go to the UCAN to help with their COVID relief efforts. The first 50 people to register will receive a free one day pass to Climb Iowa. The pass will be included when you receive your t-shirt.

1. Run, walk, jog, lift weights, etc. on your own time at your own pace

2. Keep track of each minute you are active! Download the log at www.urbandaleparksandrec.org and record the amount of minutes you exercise and the feet of elevation you have climbed.

3. Summit a new mountain each week. There is a new mountain to climb each week and you must finish climbing one mountain before you can get to the next mountain.

4. Answer the trivia question related to each of the six mountains. These questions must be answered and returned to Urbandale Parks and Recreation along with your completed activity tracking sheet to be eligible for the 1st or 2nd place prizes.

5. Connect with us and other participants by tagging your photos @UrbandaleParksandrec on Facebook and Instagram.

6. Submit your activity log between August 9-August 12, to parksandrec@urbandale.org or mail to 3600 86th St., Urbandale, IA 50322.

Turn in your completed activity tracking sheet to be eligible to win prizes!

1st place prize = $150 to the Urbandale restaurant of your choice

2nd place = $75 to the Urbandale restaurant of your choice.

(Prizes will be randomly drawn from completed activity tracking sheets.)

How do I get my T-Shirt?

Each participant who signs up by July 16 will receive a 'Climbing the Curve' t-shirt! (available after August 13)

Option 1: Choose the shipping option during registration and we will ship the t-shirt to you after August 13. Shipping is available for an additional $8. If registering for more than one person, you only pay one $8 shipping charge.

Option 2: Pick up your t-shirt at the Urbandale Parks and Recreation office: 3600 86th St. Urbandale 50322 after August 13.

SweatFIT Run Club Not Just a Virtual Road Race 2020

Let the SweatFIT Run Club help you meet your goals this running season despite the ongoing requirements of social distancing. Since the ability to gather in larger groups is limited and this summer and fall’s road races are not guaranteed – we are going mostly virtual! This is a different program than the other Virtual Road Races you can sign up for online. This is NOT just a virtual road race. This is a 7-week program where we want to create accountability to help you be successful.

Sign up for the “SweatFIT Run Club Not Just a Virtual Road Race 2020”!

Here is what you get:

For those that are comfortable running safely as a group, we will meet two days per week, Tuesdays at 6:30pm and Saturdays at 8:00am for 7 weeks. Location to be announced each day as we take advantage of the beautiful running trails we have in the area.

For those that prefer to train on their own or cannot make a group workout, we will have a private Facebook group (and alternatively email) to announce the planned workout for the day.

Workouts are planned for 3 days per week and will be posted every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday during the 7 weeks, although you can expect to hear from me everyday during the 7 weeks to keep you motivated and on track toward your goals.

Finisher Medal

Pick the distance you want to train for, let us know and we will help you get there! Whether you are starting from the couch and want to accomplish your first 5K or you are an accomplished runner and want to tackle a 10K, we will put together a plan for you and help you get there through this Virtual Road Race! Running not your deal – you get to pick your goal whether you plan to run the whole distance, part of it, or walk the whole distance – this is your “road race”.

Class Fee – Price: $50

Start Date: Saturday, August 1, 8:00am

End Date: Thursday, September 17

Meet in person (optional) on Tuesdays at 6:30pm and Saturdays at 8:00am, Virtual Workout provided for Thursdays.

Location

On the local Trail System - Location will be announced prior to each Tuesday and Saturday session.
