Mayor's Bike Ride

Join us on Sunday, May 3, 2020

Join us at the Giovannetti Community Shelter at Walker Johnston Regional Park on Sunday, May 3, 2020 at 11 AM for the Mayor’s Bike Ride! The ride starts at 1 PM! This is a FREE event brought to you by the City of Urbandale. No pre-registration is required. 

Pancake Breakfast

Urbandale Lion’s Club will be providing a pancake breakfast from 11 AM - 1 PM.

Complete Streets

Urbandale streets are being designed for convenient and comfortable travel for users of all ages and abilities regardless of their mode of transportation. Come and see complete streets in action and take a look at the master plan here.

Kids Activities

The Parks & Recreation Department, Complete Streets Committee, and the Police Department will be sponsoring a variety of fun activities for kids from 11 AM to 1 PM. (You do not need to participate in the Mayor’s Bike Ride to enjoy the free kids’ activities at this event.)

Three Routes

Short (5 miles)
Start: Walker Johnston – Giovannetti Shelter, cross the bridge to pick up the trail heading south past the Charles Gabus Memorial Tree Park head to 86th use sidewalk to get to New York Avenue, turn west (right) on New York Avenue (turns into Patricia Drive) to the Dunlap Park and Arboretum.  Enter Jackaline Baldwin Dunlap Arboretum do a loop of the Arboretum and follow the trail north out of Arboretum exit on Patricia Drive.  Immediately north of the park turn right (east) on Dewey Gibbs Road to continue to 92nd Street and through Valerius parking lot pick up sidewalk trail along tennis courts and head back to Walker Johnston Park. 

Medium (12 miles)
Start: Walker Johnston – Giovannetti Shelter, cross the bridge to pick up the trail heading south past the Charles Gabus Memorial Tree Park head to 86th use sidewalk to get to New York Avenue, turn west (right) on New York Avenue (turns into Patricia Drive) to the Jackaline Baldwin Dunlap Park and Arboretum.

Enter Jackaline Baldwin Dunlap Arboretum do a loop of the Arboretum and follow the trail north out of Arboretum exit on Patricia Drive.  Immediately north of the park turn right (east) on Dewey Gibbs Road to continue to Mary Lynn Drive, turn left (north) on Mary Lynn to Douglas Avenue. Use stoplight to cross Douglas. Turn west (left) and follow the Douglas Avenue/Pkwy Trail to 128th, turn north (right) follow 128th north to Meredith Drive, turn east (right) on Meredith to trail entrance just past 95th. Head south on the neighborhood trails. Exit at Douglas Avenue trail. Turn east (left) follow trail and travel under Douglas Avenue and continue to the Walker Johnston Park.

Long (18mile) 
Start- Walker Johnston – Giovannetti Shelter, cross bridge to pick up the trail heading south past the Charles Gabus Memorial Tree Park head to 86th use sidewalk to get to New York Avenue, turn west (right) on New York Avenue (turns into Patricia Drive) to the Jackaline Baldwin Dunlap Park and Arboretum.

Enter Jackaline Baldwin Dunlap Arboretum do a loop of the Arboretum and follow trail north out of Arboretum exit on Patricia Drive.  Immediately north of the park turn right (east) on Dewey Gibbs Road to continue to Mary Lynn Drive, turn left (north) on Mary Lynn to Douglas Avenue. Use stoplight to cross Douglas. Turn west (left) and follow the Douglas Avenue/Pkwy Trail to entrance to Walnut Creek Regional Park (around 148th),  head north on the Bob Layton trail as it travels through the Regional Park. Exit Trail on Meredith (near new fire station), turn east (right) on Meredith Drive Trail to trail entrance just past 95th. Head south on the neighborhood trails. Exit at Douglas Avenue trail. Turn east (left) follow trail and travel under Douglas and continue to the Walker Johnston Park.
