The Patrol Division's responsibilities are to provide public safety, maintain order, respond to emergencies, enforce traffic and criminal law, conduct criminal and accident investigations, and promote good community relations through community policing initiatives.
Captain Dan Stein started his law enforcement career in January 1988 with the Buffalo County Sheriff's Office, Kearney, NE. In 2000, Capt. Stein joined the Urbandale Police Department and served in the Patrol Division before being transferred to the Criminal Investigation Division. As a Detective, he served as a School Resource Officer, Arson Investigator, and Crimes Against Persons Detective.
In May 2010 he was promoted to Sergeant and served in the Patrol, Administrative Services and Criminal Investigation Divisions.
In May 2018, he was promoted to Captain and is currently assigned as the Patrol Division Commander.
Capt. Stein is a former Team Leader for the Hostage/Crisis Negotiators for the Suburban Emergency Response Team (SERT). He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Kearney with a BS Degree in Criminal Justice.
