Adult Programs (Spring/Summer)
As the days get longer and the weather gets warmer, we are excited to offer a wide range of events and activities for adults this spring and summer. From fitness classes to outdoor recreation opportunities, our programs are designed to help you stay active and engaged all season long. Whether you're looking to improve your health and wellness, try something new, or just enjoy the beautiful outdoors, we have something to suit your interests. Our classes and events are a great way to meet new people and make lasting memories. Registration is easy and convenient - simply click on the "registration deadline" link after each class description to sign up online (or call our office). Our programs are open to all, so bring a friend and share the experience.
LIFETIME Fitness Adult Tennis Lessons - $86
Play. Learn. Love. is a program provided by LifeTime Tennis. This program is geared for beginner and returning tennis players. It has been developed specifically for busy adults looking to learn the sport quickly. These partner-based, action-packed group lessons are taught by certified and LifeTime trained tennis pros. Sign up today to enjoy, have fun, and be a part of the best sport in the world. Once you have completed the Play session you can move into the Learn sessions portion of the curriculum. The Love clinic is the 3rd tier. Once you have graduated from Play and Learn you reach the 1.5-2.0 NTRP level. Love clinics help you to enhance consistency, learn more strategy, and enjoy singles and doubles point play, fun drills, and head-to-head games. Instructor: Faith Bliss. Accessible Yoga for Your Body - $45
Are you experiencing physical challenges with the body and think that means you cannot practice yoga? Let me introduce you to Accessible Yoga! This is yoga that welcomes bodies of all ages, sizes, shapes, abilities and backgrounds. This is yoga for those experiencing physical limitations, injury, chronic illness, living in a larger body, physical disability, mobility and balance concerns, or healing after a surgery. This is YOUR yoga. Variations are offered for every posture to meet YOUR body where it's at on that day. Practice fully seated, standing or move between the two. Janis guides you to explore and experience the variations to discover what is best for your body on that day. The practice is gentle, mindful and slow yet builds strength, stability and flexibility. Move your body with the breath and find the peace within. Janis Ware, RYT, of Your Yoga with Janis offers accessible/adaptive yoga, chair yoga, therapeutic yoga, yoga for non-traditional bodies and trauma-informed classes. Janis specializes in teaching yoga to those who think they cannot do yoga and believes all bodies are yoga bodies. Class size limited to 10 to provide safe distancing during movement & individual guidance on variations. Please bring a yoga mat and a large bath towel. CY-HAWK Pickleball Tournament (ages 18+) - $20
This exciting, new tournament is a great way to show support for your favorite college football team, enjoy the company of other pickleball players, and have some FUN! The Tournament will take place at Walker Johnston Park. Prizes will be awarded. There will be two divisions: Division I: 18-54 yrs and Division II: 55+. BOTH players must be in the same age bracket. This is not a USA Pickleball sanctioned event - this is just for FUN! You must pre-register as a team to participate. (both names, ages, and contact info). There will be a maximum of 20 teams per division. Check in at 7:45am. Tournament begins at 8:30am. Register EARLY - Space is limited. Registration Deadline: September 1
Forest Bathing / Shinrin Yoku (ages 18+) - $15
Come and enjoy a non-strenuous hike while immersing yourself in nature. Forest Bathing is adapted from the Japanese practice Shinrin Yoku. It is a guided mindful practice that uses invitations to explore our senses to reconnect with nature. Research finds that time spent in nature has positive effects on our physical and mental well-being. Come participate and learn more about the benefits of a mindful practice of exploring nature. Summer Coed Sand Volleyball League - $150
Bring out your winter team and dig your feet in the sand! If you enjoy recreational volleyball, the outdoors, and fun in the sun, the Urbandale Coed Sand Volleyball league is for you. We will play on Tuesday OR Thursday nights. Season: June - Early August. Registration Deadline: May 22
Yoga Basics With Beth - $32
Discover your strength, flexibility, and balance while you learn to decrease stress through movement and relaxation. This class series is designed for the absolute beginner. In the classes, you will experience gentle warm-ups and receive step-by-step instructions for yoga postures and basic relaxation techniques. Your questions and interaction will be welcome. Whether your intention is to maintain wellness, seek a healing refuge from all of the business in your life, or learn how to grow personally or spiritually, now is the time to honor your intention. Please bring a yoga mat as well as a firm blanket or beach towel. Registration Deadline: One week before class begins.
Yoga With Beth - $40
The purpose of yoga is to soothe the inner spirit by calming the mind and body. Yoga poses help slow us down and we naturally become more focused and relaxed. As students grow in their yoga experience, the poses become more challenging, allowing the body to grow stronger and more limber. At any level, the benefits of yoga are the same-stronger muscular endurance, sharpened mental clarity, deeper flexibility, improved circulation and immunity and above all a heightened sense of well-being. Let yoga start you on a journey you can enjoy for a lifetime-body, mind and spirit! This class is for active individuals who are injury-free. Registration Deadline: One week before class begins.
Zumba - $38
Everybody and Every Body! Each Zumba® class is designed to bring people together to sweat on it. We take the "work" out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. Once the Latin and World rhythms take over, you'll see why Zumba® fitness classes are often called exercise in disguise. Super effective? Check. Super Fun? Check and check. A total body workout, combining all elements of fitness - cardio, muscle conditioning, balance, flexibility, and boosted energy plus a serious dose of awesome each time you leave a class. Miracle League - Fall (ages 5+) - FREE
The Miracle League is a FREE baseball/softball league for children with special needs from age 5 - 18 and adults 19 and older. The Miracle League is just like baseball. Players will bat, round the bases, catch, throw, and hit Home Runs! There are a few differences in how the game is played. (1) Each player has a buddy that gets to assist them. (2) Each player will bat once each inning. (3) Every player is safe, no one is out. (4) Every player will score a run before the inning is over. (5) The last player up hits a HOME RUN. (6) Every game ends in a tie. (7) A game will last two innings or an hour. Special rubberized playing surface. Urbandale Parks and Recreation will assign players to teams after registration is complete. Each team will need at least two parent coaches. Registration Deadline: August 14

R A D (Rape Aggression Defense) (ages 11+) - $25
R.A.D. was founded in 1989 by Larry Nadeau as another option for women to keep themselves safe against rape abduction. The Urbandale Police Department teaches R.A.D. where students learn self-defense, threat awareness, risk awareness, risk reduction, risk recognition, and risk avoidance. The students wear protective gear and get to utilize the training they have been taught in a controlled but realistic setting. R.A.D. has a lifetime return and practice policy. Parent(s)/Guardian(s) of students under 18 years old will need to contact the instructor prior to the start of the session. Once a student has successfully completed the course they can attend classes anywhere in the country, free of charge. Returning students who have a signed RAD workbook should NOT sign up online, but rather email Officer Pickett for registration hpickett@urbandale.org or call 515-278-3910. The session is a total of (4) classes, with classes 1-3 being mandatory and the 4th class optional. Registration fees include manual, t-shirt, and light snacks. Please note shirt size when registering. Registration Deadline: March 8
Safety City 2023 - $40
Safety City is a week-long summer program for children entering kindergarten in the Fall of 2023. They will learn about traffic safety, fire safety, home, playground and other kinds of personal safety in an entertaining, positive environment. To make learning about safety fun we incorporate songs, story books, videos, games, and artwork in addition to riding Big Wheels in a mock city setting. We also provide the experience of riding on a school bus to the Urbandale Police and Fire departments for tours. Safety City 2023 is open to students who live in Urbandale or are attending Urbandale Schools, Urbandale non-public schools, and those in Urbandale homeschool programs. Safety City is taught by Urbandale Police Officers and staff, assisted by a team of student helpers. Fee includes t-shirt, bike helmet, and daily snacks. Maximum 35 students per session. Registration Deadline: May 27
Summer Park Scavenger Hunt - FREE
Urbandale Parks and Recreation has 57 parks within the city limits. Do you know where they are? How many have you been to? What is unique about each park? Spend the summer with your family exploring each of those 57 parks. After the registration deadline, you will receive a list of clues with one specific detail of each park. Complete the list challenge and email it to cbarkema@urbandale.org by Friday, September 1. All correct Summer Scavenger Hunt lists will be entered into a drawing for fabulous prizes! Registration Deadline: May 26
Storytime in the Park! (All ages) - FREE
The Parks and Recreation Department and the Urbandale Library have partnered together to bring you Storytime! Come enjoy stories, songs, rhymes and other activities that delight and entertain as well as encourage the love of reading. Storytime will happen each Tuesday morning at 10:00 am and Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. at a different park each week. Try to visit them all! No registration required.
Good Nutrition on a Budget - $3
Learn strategies to plan menus, save money on food expenses, incorporate new ideas into your diet, and get active while exploring the Spend Smart Eat Smart website and app Instructor: Tom Keinert, ISU Extension Nutrition and Wellness Specialist. Registration Deadlines: May 31, August 23
