Youth Programs (Summer)

Adventures in the Parks (Ages 10-13)   $125

This is a new summer program geared for the young tweens. Each week is themed full of hands-on projects, activities, field trips, experiences, games, experiments, arts and more. You will learn about what the parks mean to your community and what you can do to help your community. The program is supervised by adults. Bring clothes that you can work, play, and have fun in, sunscreen, bug spray, gloves, socks, shoes, water bottle, snacks and a sack lunch daily. Each day you will meet and be picked up at Giovannetti Community Shelter, then travel to many different locations, getting hands-on experiences throughout the City. All participants MUST be picked up by 3:00 p.m. (unless parent written permission is given to have child walk/bike from the park). Fees include admission, transportation for field trips and a free T-shirt. One week sessions. Minimum 8 / Maximum 10 per week. This program is held rain or shine, hot or cold. Adventurer’s Camp (Ages 10-13)   $170

This is an exciting new camp for tweens to HAVE FUN this summer!! These camps are packed with exciting adventures, trips, experiments, and hands-on projects. The camp is supervised by adults. You will be instructed on appropriate apparel to bring each week depending on adventures and trips planned when you register. Each day you will meet and be picked up at Giovannetti Community Shelter, then travel to many different locations, depending on the week. All participants MUST be picked up by 3:00 p.m. (unless parent written permission is given to have child walk/bike from the park). Fees include admission, transportation, and a free T-shirt. Participants will need to bring sack lunch, snacks, water bottle, and extra money for snacks/drinks if desired. One week sessions. Adventurers Camp

Kid’s Summer Camp (Ages 6-10)   $50

Participants will enjoy a “theme of the week” and a variety of activities will be offered including crafts, games, sports, board games, and guest speakers.  Fee will include T-shirt, snacks, and all supplies.  Please bring a full water bottle daily. Please note that this program is not intended as childcare, but rather a fun recreational opportunity for children during the summer. This program will be held in rain or shine, or cold. In case of inclement weather, the program will be moved inside the shelter. One week sessions morning and/or afternoons. All participants MUST be picked up at the appropriate time (unless the parent has provided prior written permission to walk or bike). Painted Rocks in the Parks (Ages 2 and up)   $3

Join us for rock painting.  Fun, creative, and relaxing. All supplies are provided to paint three rocks and take home or leave in the park for someone to find and enjoy.  We will show you several different techniques to choose.  Endless possibilities of ideas. Sidewalk Chalk (Ages 2 and up)  FREE

Join us at Lions Park for Sidewalk Chalk.  We will provide the chalk you bring your artistic abilities and enjoy creating art on the walkways in the park. Princess Tea Party in the Park (Ages 2 and up plus Adult)   $15

Come to the park and have a tea party with your special adult.   We will provide lemonade (tea), cookies, and a flower for every participant.  Remember your camera for special photos with a princess.  Note this park is shaded!  Price is per person – please register both child and adult.  Min 10 / Max 20.  Registration Deadline: June 16

Heroes in the Park (Ages 2 and up plus Adult)   $15

Come to the park with your special adult and enjoy root beer floats, games and fun with heroes in the park.  We will provide bags, safe lawn darts, horseshoes, spike ball, Kan Jam, and more. We will provide root beer floats.  Remember your camera for special photos with special heroes.  Price is per person – please register both child and adult.  Note this park is shaded! Ribbon Dancing in the Park (Ages 1 year and up)   $5

Scavenger Hunt in the Park (Age 2 years and up)   FREE

Come join us in a scavenger hunt at Dunlap Park.  We will provide you with items to locate throughout the park.  Prizes will be awarded.  Children under 12 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No registration is needed. Knox Canine Training, Obedience 1 (Ages 13 and up)   $214

This is a once a week class for 6 weeks, focusing on basic obedience including sit, down, stay with release cue, impulse control, meet and greet, loose leash walking, and recall.  Class is best for dogs 9 months or older.  Note:  If your dog is reactive or aggressive to other dogs you cannot sign up for a class at this location. Writer’s Workshop Camp  (Grades 3-6)   $199

Have you heard? Iowa has brought Writing into the new ISASP (Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress). Our 1 week long Writer’s Workshop Camp will get students’ creative juices flowing as they collaborate with others to create a portfolio of work representing real world materials ranging from websites and marketing flyers to descriptive, narrative, and poetic pieces. The Writer’s Workshop Camp will culminate with a group-published journal of student work, and arm them with the tools they need to tackle the new writing demands of the ISASP with confidence!  Fee includes all materials.  Min 1 / Max 4. SuperKids AllSport Camp (Ages 3-5)   $25

A perfect introductory sports program for your little ones, SuperKids AllSport Camps will introduce multiple sports throughout the five days while focusing on physical activity.  Through interactive games, drills, obstacles, and exercises, your kiddos will have fun staying active while learning the basic fundamentals of sports including basketball, tennis, track and field, volleyball, gymnastics, and more.  Taught by professionals with sports and recreation degrees and multiple years of teaching youth sports and fitness. These camps will be both educational and age-appropriate.  Equipment for each sport will be provided, so all you need is tennis shoes and a water bottle!  Min. 5/Max. 12 participants. An oldie, but a goodie! Join us for a fun afternoon of BINGO! All participants need to bring one full sized candy bar the day of the event to put in the prize pool. Those participants that match a BINGO win a candy bar from the prize pool. Open to all ages, however anyone who cannot read numbers or manage their own card should be accompanied by someone who can assist them. Arts in the Park  (Ages 6-11)   $6

Tie Dye: The annual favorite! Bring your white t-shirts, shorts, socks, hats, or other articles of clothing to tie dye. You will be amazed at the incredible designs which can be created! Maximum 15 participants.
Flower Pot Decorating: What a fun way to start the summer! Participants will get a chance to decorate a clay pot with many different craft items, and then actually pot a neat little plant to bring home. Maximum 15 participants.
Garden Critters: You will have the choice of creating a garden critter, a clay pot critter, garden snakes, or decorations.  We will provide you with the supplies you’ll need to dress up your garden!  Maximum 15 participants.  Registration Deadline: June 9, June 17, July 1

Youth Tennis (Ages 9-18)   $28

Each participant should wear clothing to fit the weather and be prepared to exercise. Participants provide their own racquet; tennis balls will be provided. All sessions are held at Walker Johnston Park. The Parks and Rec department and the Urbandale library have partnered together to bring you Storytime!  Come enjoy stories, songs, rhymes and other activities that delight and entertain as well as encourage the love of reading.  Storytime will happen each Tuesday morning at 10:00 am and Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. at a different park each week. Martial Arts (Ages 8+)   $80

Join Jim Douglas, 6th degree black belt and Master Instructor. Learn a traditional martial art that stresses self-defense, physical fitness, self-control and discipline. This is full martial arts incorporating principles from karate, hap ki do, tae kwon do and kempo. The program is for ages 8 and above and the techniques taught are adaptable to any age or physical level. This is what makes this program different from other martial arts programs! Flowers for Mom   $10

There is nothing mom’s love more than spending time with their kids and flowers.  You can give them both for Mother’s Day. Register with Urbandale Parks and recreation and get Flowers for Mom.  For $10 you will receive two flower pots to decorate, potting soil, seeds and a fun Mother’s Day craft.  Flowers for Mom kits will arrive at your doorstep on Friday, May 7.  This is a great way to give your mom, or yourself, a happy Mother’s Day.  Max 50. This class uses Scratch, a coding platform developed by MIT, as a tool to teach core computer science and coding concepts such as loop, conditional, motion, and sensing. Students will also work on a project in each session ranging from animation, games, to graphic design and storytelling, etc. The class employs a variety of interesting topics to teach logical thinking and inspire creativity, so your kids are not only learning but also creating starting from day. Circuit Wizards: Intro to Arduino (Ages 9-12)   $250

We are surrounded by electronics: smart phones, computers, TVs, robots, and more! While lots of students have learned to code, few have had the opportunity to build a physical system, which opens up a brand new world. In this class, we introduce students to circuit and Arduino, one of the most popular single-board devices. This class uses an Arduino simulator and does not require a physical device. However, if you prefer, an Arduino can be purchased online. The same code your student creates in class will work on the device without any changes. My First Mobile Apps (Ages 11 and up)   $250 

Create Powerful Mobile Apps Using Simple Intuitive Design and Coding. In this course, students will learn the basics of the mobile programming environment and how to code their very own apps. They will explore how to employ text, device sensors, and even the camera to build projects and games that involve image recognition, word games, and riddles! The next unit will build on mobile and computational concepts from the first unit. Lights and Beats with Micro:Bit (Ages 7-9)   $250

Micro:Bit coding is the perfect fit if your child is interest in electronics. Or if they may want to build robots or rockets one day. This little device packs very powerful capabilities: LED lights, speakers, a temperature sensor, a microphone, and even an accelerometer. Coding is done in a simulator that works just like the physical Micro:Bit. You don’t need the physical device to take the class. Minecraft Code to Mod (Ages 9-12)   $250 

Does your kid love playing Minecraft? Now you can turn that into love for coding as well. Let your kids’ creativity shine in this class, where students can code games, stories, buildings, and anything else they want to make happen in Minecraft and see them come alive in the game. The coding is done through a drag a drop interface similar to Scratch. But we teach much deeper computer programming methodologies commonly used in actual programming languages. It is a great next step for kids who have mastered Scratch and would like to continue to learn coding. In this class, we introduce students to the platform for coding on Minecraft. It is easy to use and very powerful. Cloud Computing with Web Apps (Ages 11 and up)   $250 

Cloud computing is used to power nearly every website on the Internet, as well as most mobile applications. In this class, students learn how to create interactive web applications using Google Cloud Platform and Firebase. These are the same tools used by professional software engineers!
