Urbandale Memorial Tree Park
If you have been to the Urbandale Public Library or used the bike path behind the library this summer you may have noticed a very special place taking shape here in Urbandale. That place is the Urbandale Memorial Tree Park. This park will not only add to the beauty of our community, but also provide a way for residents to honor family, friends or anyone of their choosing. Concrete walkways have been installed, the perennial flowerbeds have been framed, and fill dirt and mulch have been applied to most of the beds.
Urbandale Friends of the Parks in conjunction with the Urbandale Tree Board is spearheading the development of the Park which is located on three-fourths of an acre, south of the library and adjacent to the current bike trial.
The Park will feature a variety of trees and shrubs, perennial gardens, an event plaza, benches, walkways, lighting, green space and potentially sculptures and a water feature. A $25,000 Community Betterment grant from the Polk County Board of Supervisors and $20,000 from the City of Urbandale for infrastructure development have served to jump start this project. However, the bulk of the cost for the park will need to come from private donations. To date, additional funding and support has come from local citizens, community organizations, and civic minded businesses such as Iowa Outdoor Products, Continental Western Insurance, TK & J, LLP, Des Moines Asphalt, the Underground Company, M2K Marketing Group, Medtronics, and RDG Planning and Design.
While donations in any amount are welcome, anyone donating $100 or more will be given the opportunity to designate their donation in memory or in honor of a person or persons of their choosing. Recognition levels vary from a small engraved paver for $100 to a tree with an engraved granite stone mounted on a concrete base for $1000. Donations are tax deductible.
The goal is to have all 21 trees planted this fall. They are being offered on a first come first serve basis. Anyone interested in donating a tree should contact Bruce Bernard at 278-5725, e-mail
