Training Division
The Training Division is responsible for all Fire Department training, including staff certifications, best practices and industry standards. The Division is also responsible for providing community training to Urbandale's residents and businesses.
Assistant Chief of Training's Biography

Assistant Chief Cardwell is a 24 year veteran of emergency services and fire service training/education. AC Cardwell came to the Urbandale Fire Department in August, 2008 from the Cincinnati, Ohio region, where he previously served in command and training positions with several combination fire departments. AC Cardwell began his career in 1985 as a volunteer and was appointed to his first leadership position as a Lieutenant in 1988. In 1990, he obtained his first career position as the program coordinator of the Great Oaks Vocational Fire/EMS Training program. Since 1996, AC Cardwell has served in various training and command positions, culminating with his appointment here in Urbandale.
Chief Cardwell was originally certified as a paramedic in 1990, and is also certified by the State of Iowa as a Fire Fighter II, Fire Inspector and Fire Instructor. He is an active instructor and has developed and taught more than a dozen of his own training programs. He has worked as a technical consultant on two fire service texts, and is a member of the
International Society of Fire Service Instructors and well as the National Fire Academy Alumni Association.
