Walker Johnston Park Shelter House
The demolition of the existing Walker Johnston Park shelter and construction of a new park/tornado shelter at Walker Johnston Park in Urbandale began the week of August 27, 2012.
The City of Urbandale received a $1.03 million Federal FEMA grant to help with the cost to construct the new shelter. The project will take approximately one year to complete. The new 5,800 square foot facility will be available for rentals and include a main room about 3,000 square feet, kitchen, restrooms, fireplace, partition wall and covered patio. In case of severe weather, the shelter will hold up to 600 people.
