Community Relations/Crime Prevention
Officer Randy Peterson is the Community Relations Officer for the Police Department. Officer Peterson brings to the Community Relations position experience in community policing concepts and public speaking. Peterson is looking forward to building bridges between the Police Department and the residents of Urbandale.
Officer Peterson has been an Urbandale Police Officer since 2005 and has prior experience as a Reserve Officer with the Altoona Police Department for four years. Officer Peterson's Urbandale experience includes serving 1½ years as the department's Traffic Enforcement Officer and is currently the Public Information Officer and works closely with local media outlets. He also has experience as a child safety seat technician, a bike patrol officer and a watch commander. He is a member of the Police Department’s Honor Guard and is the former President and current Treasurer of the Urbandale Police Protective and Benevolent Association. Officer Peterson is the current Vice President of the Iowa Crime Prevention Association and was awarded the Iowa Crime Prevention Association 2012 Practitioner of the Year. Officer Peterson is also a graduate of the 2011 Leadership Urbandale and is currently on the steering committee for the Leadership Urbandale. Officer Peterson is the Departments liaison between the Polk County Crimestoppers, Polk County Substance Abuse and Addictions Workgroup, Urbandale 4th of July Committee, Urbandale Chamber of Commerce and Urbandale Community Action Network.
Officer Peterson currently handles the following programs, Community Crime Eye, National Night Out, MAC Camp, Crime Free Multi Housing, Crime Free Hotel/Motel, Citizen’s Police Academy, Junior Detective Class, Safety City, Block Party Approvals, CarFit, and handles the Facebook and Twitter account for the police department.
