Civil Rights Commission

The Civil Rights Commission consists of five members who must be residents of Urbandale. Members are appointed by the Mayor, approved by the City Council and serve three-year terms.

The Commission meets the third Thursday of every other month at 7:00 p.m., starting in January. Meetings are held at City Hall (3600 86th Street). Commission's Areas of Focus:

  • Works with the Iowa Civil Rights Commission to review discrimination complaints filed in Urbandale. To report a discrimination complaint, complete the complaint form, or contact the Urbandale Civil Rights Commission, or contact the Iowa Civil Rights Commission at 1-800-457-4416.
  • Exercises the enforcement power of the City to protect, to the extent possible, the rights of citizens secured by the "Iowa Civil Rights Act of 1965". The ICR Act of 1965 ensures the equal opportunity for all persons in their pursuit of employment, public accommodation or service, housing, education and credit transactions.
  • Promoted education and public outreach to prohibit discriminatory practices, whether direct or indirect, which deny any person rights and/or opportunities because of age, race, creed, color, sex, national origin, religion, ancestry, sexual identity and orientation, or disability; and to provide for the execution of the policies embodied in Federal acts to prohibit discrimination; and to promote cooperation between the City of Urbandale, and State and Federal agencies enforcing those acts; and to establish an Urbandale Civil Rights Commission for the accomplishment of such purposes.
