Roundabout History | The City's first roundabout
opened in early November 2004, at the intersection of Douglas Parkway and So just what is a roundabout? It's a type of intersection design that allows for increased intersection capacity without the use of traditional traffic signals. The signature feature of a roundabout is an island in the middle of the intersection. The following interactive demonstration illustrates how to use a roundabout. (The demonstration requires that you have the Flash plug-in installed on your PC. You can download it here for free.)
Special thanks to the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and the Maryland Department of Transportation for permission to adapt their demonstration video and general roundabout information. For a complete technical overview of traffic roundabouts, visit the website of the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center, a unit of the US Department of Transportation. |
