All peddlers and solicitors who go door-to-door in residential areas in Urbandale must first obtain a peddler's license from the City Clerk, 515.278.3900.
122.03 LICENSE REQUIRED. Any person engaging in peddling, soliciting or in the business of a transient merchant in the City without first obtaining a license as herein provided is in violation of this chapter. [From the Code of Ordinances of the City of Urbandale, 1999.]
Obtaining a peddler's license involves submitting an application and undergoing a criminal history check, and may take up to 24 hours. There is a $5.00 non-refundable fee to apply for a license, plus there is a $20.00 fee for the license itself.
A valid license allows an individual to go door-to-door between 9:00am and 8:00pm, Monday through Saturday, and between 1:00pm and 5:00pm on Sunday.
A license is issued to an individual, not an organization. Therefore, every individual must have a license. It is not sufficient for an individual's employer to have a permit.
A license holder must display the license to any prospective customer who asks to see it.
If a peddler comes to your home and does not have a valid license; refuses to show his or her license; or is rude, abusive, or threatening in any way, please contact the Urbandale Police at 515.222.3321. If it is an emergency, call 911!
