The Senior Center, located at 7305 Aurora Avenue, offers a variety of social, recreational and educational programs for senior citizens. Senior Center Hours: (515) 278-3907Monday Thursday 9:00 a.m.3:00 p.m. Friday As programmed (see schedule) Transportation: Urbandale residents may call the Caring Corps at 278-3999, for assistance with transportation.Computer Lab: The computer lab is available for independent use during regular center hours, unless there is a class or seminar in session (please call ahead to check schedule) An Internet connection is available.Fitness Room: A treadmill and recumbent cross-trainer are available for use on a first-come, first-served basis. A physicians release is required for all fitness activities. Do You Receive the Senior Newsletter? A semi-monthly calendar of events is available to those interested in participating in activities. If you would like to request a newsletter, call 278-3907 with your name, address and phone number and we will send you information. A balanced meal is served on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The meal is served at 12:00 noon and the fee is $2.00*. Reservations must be made by 1:00 p.m. the business day prior to the meal. (Monday reservations must be made by 12:00 p.m. Friday). If possible, the same observance should be followed for cancellations.*Fee increases to $2.50 on July 1, 2008. Mondays:

Wellness, Recreation and Education Programs: Mondays, 9:00 9:45 a.m. & Tuesday & Thursday, 9:30 - 10:15 a.m. 45-minutes of high-energy fun, focusing on functional fitness. Classes may include stretching, strengthening and toning, and aerobic exercise to keep the heart healthy, and to increase muscular strength and range of motion. Weights, resistance tubes and bands are provided for additional fitness benefit. All fitness levels are welcome. Please consult with the instructor, prior to class, if you have special health considerations or needs. Instructors: Various instructors. Instructor: Ruth Kneile Wednesdays, 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is a community-based program designed to help those who have joint and/or muscle problems achieve improved joint mobility, muscle strength and endurance in order to improve the performance of their daily activities. Designed to bring more movement to the individual with arthritis, it is also beneficial for anyone interested in relief from stiffness while improving mobility. Instructor: This is a video-led class Fridays, 10:00 - 10:55 a.m. $1.00 per class The perfect way to start your weekend is dancing! Join this enthusiastic group as they learn new, and revisit old-favorite line dances. This is a great class for beginners, or anyone who wants to dance and have a lot of fun (And get your cardiovascular exercise!) Instructor: Joanne Emery Wednesdays, 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. This class offers a mixture of hatha and yin yoga to encourage relaxation and provide a very good stretch. Bring a mat or rug and a light blanket or towel. Mats are available for use to anyone wanting to try the class before purchasing a mat. Beginners welcome! Instructor: Keith Gass Senior Singers: Tuesdays, 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. No singing experience is necessary to join this enthusiastic, fun-loving, and talented group. Songbooks are filled with old favorites and classics. This group has been invited to entertain both at the Senior Center and for community groups. Men and women alike will enjoy this healthy and entertaining experience! Director: Clara Wyatt Wiiฎ Indoor Sports Leagues! Join the Nintendo Wiiฎ revolution! Have some competitive fun and get a great workout! Sign up for a virtual bowling team and compete during an 8-week season. Wiiฎ demonstration workshops will be held for beginners on June 6th & July 11th. League schedules will be available at these workshops. AARP Driver Safety Program: Offered monthly. Please call 278-3907 for dates and times. Learn defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws, rules of the road, and more in this 8-hour course. Find out how to adjust your driving to age-related changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time. Auto insurance companies in most states provide a multi-year discount to graduates! Butterfliz of Iowa Educational Programs: Friday, May 9, 9:30 a.m. & 1:30 p.m. A perfect program to put you in the spirit of Spring! Learn many fun and educational facts about these beautiful and intriguing creatures, particularly those native to our region. Live butterflies will be available to view. Call 278-3907 to pre-register. Bus trip to Hoyt Sherman Place for "Menopause the Musical": Wednesday, June 4, 1:00 p.m. end of show. Enjoy a Mediterranean salad luncheon before departing for the show. Then enjoy the afternoon at this historic theater for a joyful musical parody set to 25 classic baby-boomer songs that will leave you laughing and cheering. Bus will depart the senior center at 1:00 p.m. and return immediately following the show. $30 per person. Steak Fry & Variety Show: Friday, June 13, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. This summer, our steak fry will include a community variety show! A steak dinner will be served at 5:00 p.m. including a grilled steak, baked potato, salad, roll, beverage and dessert. Then comes the really fun part! We are seeking talented members of the community who would like to take part in a variety show. Singers, comedians, dancers, magician, etc. Call 278-3907 to tell us about your talent and sign-up for the show. Tickets go on sale May 16. $10 per ticket. Friday Night Card Party: Friday, August 8, 5:30 - 9:00 p.m. Get some friends together and join us for an evening of card playing and socializing. Coffee, treats, and door prizes add to this evening of fun. Stop in or call to reserve a table beginning July 21. Fee: $5 per person. The Community Room in the new Senior Center is also available for private, not-for-profit rental. It has a full commercial kitchen, air conditioning, and approximately 19 tables and 185 chairs. The room is available for rental on Friday nights, and all day on Saturday and Sunday. The Community Room must be rented by an Urbandale resident at the Parks and Recreation office. |
