General Information

The Urbandale Parks and Recreation Department consists of a Parks Division and a Recreation and Community Education Division. The Parks Division maintains and manages all of the "hardware," including over 850 acres of parkland, 33 miles of trails, seven shelter houses, 12 tennis courts, six ball diamonds, ten soccer fields, a skateboard park, a skating pond, and a sledding hill.

The Recreation and Community Education Division develops and manages all of the "software." This includes the swimming pool programs, classes and programs for all ages, seasonal programs, and educational programs.

Trail System

Urbandale boasts an extensive trail system with over 33 miles of maintained trails. Maps of the trails are available online, at the Parks and Recreation office, or at City Hall.  If you'd like to sponsor an activity that includes the use of the trails, please call the Parks and Recreation office at 515.278.3963 for a list of guidelines.

Tennis Courts

Tennis courts are available at South Karen Acres Park, Walker Johnston Park, and Lions Park. All courts are open to the public FREE of charge except at times when there are classes and competitions. Please honor these exceptions. Court courtesy applies. Parks close at 10:30 p.m.

Skate Park
Walker Johnston Park
Urbandale, 50322

The Urbandale Parks and Recreation Department offers a skateboard park for area boarders.  The park is  located at Walker Johnston Park, 9000 Douglas Ave.  Boarders can enjoy an area with two 20-foot wide escalated quarter pipes, a street spine, a 90-degree bank street hip, and a fun box.

Sledding Hill

One of Urbandale's most unique parks is the sledding hill just west of the Metro Ice Sports Facility at 5100 NW 72nd Street. The hill is opened when there is a 4-inch snow base (a sign will be posted). A warming room, with a fireplace, and concessions are available in the Ice Facility and tube rentals are available.

Please note: Metal runners and glass containers are not allowed on the sledding hill.

Ice Skating
The pond at Lakeview Park (80th Street and Aurora Ave.) may be used for ice skating when ice conditions are adequate. Signs are posted indicating whether the ice is thick enough for skating.
