The Property Maintenance Code requires properties to be kept reasonably neat and in repair, and nuisances abated, to help preserve neighborhood property values. Copies of the Property Maintenance Code are available online or at the Department of Community Development, 3600 86th Street. Copies are available on floppy disk or in “hard copy” for no charge. The Sign Ordinance controls the size, placement and design of signs. Copies of the Sign Ordinance are available online or at the Department of Community Development, 3600 86th Street. Copies are available on floppy disk or in “hard copy” for $5.00. The Department of Community Development responds to reports of possible violations of the Property Maintenance Code, Sign Ordinance, and Zoning Ordinance. Common zoning complaints involve signs on utility poles or in the street right-of-way, a business being operated in a home, auto sales and repair, or conversions of single-family residences to duplex or multi-family housing. If the inappropriate activity is not voluntarily stopped, the Department will work with the City Attorney to issue a citation or file court action. Citizens may report a possible violation online, by email, by phone at (515) 278-3935 or in person at 3600 86th Street, or by mail. Citizen complaints may be made anonymously and privacy will be protected.
