The City Manager’s Office provides day to day direction for the City.
The City Manager makes recommendations on operations and policies to the Mayor and City Council. The City Manager is appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council.
A.J. Johnson is the City Manager. Mr. Johnson was appointed in July 2009. He was previously the City Manager for the City of Muscatine, Iowa.
Mr. Johnson values residents having access to City information. To reach that goal the City uses a variety of media sources, including the City’s website, press releases, and social media.

The City maintains an account on Twitter and Facebook to share events, community alerts, and other important information. City Departments also maintain social media accounts and a list of those accounts can be at the Social Media Center.
Official publications of the City are published in the “Des Moines Register” and in the lobby of City Hall. This includes official meeting and public hearing notices.
